Indie rock n roll with a hint of blues

Mr. Derry describes their sound as "Indie rock & roll with a hint of blues". The bands philosophy on song writing and their music has a very classic feel. The hint of blues definition refers to classic rock and roll that emerged in the 60’s and 70’s where R&B was still Rhythm and Blues and not Craig David! Mr Derry do not write songs to sum up the meaning of life or to create a new science form. The band writes about what they know, see and hear every day. Social commenting tracks such as ‘Hey Stella’ refer to the ‘chav’ sub culture that lives on our streets today. The songs are energetic, powerful and most importantly relevant.

Under the influence

"We are all into older styles of music, rock and roll blues and folk. We listen to bands such as the Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground, Taj Mahal, and The Band. You can feel these influences when you listen to the music". The bands guitar riffs have often been compared to Kings of Leon which Mr Derry are all too pleased to embrace. In fact, on first sighting Mr Derry could be mistaken for The Kings of Leon with Debbie Harry or Joni Mitchell taking the mic.

Growing and evolving

So far Mr Derry have caused a scene in the Staffordshire area and are now followed in great numbers. This was made evident when the band appeared at the Lichfield Rock and Pop festival in the summer of 2005 in front of hundreds of adoring Derriers! The chant ‘Derry, Derry, Derry!’ is getting more frequent and louder at every show. Having built this local following the band are now starting to stretch their wings into Manchester and have played at the ‘Late Bar’ with more dates being offered. Mr Derry have also visited High Wycombe three times to great success. Not only did the band clean up at ‘The Unsigned Band Showcase 2005’ held at Buckinghamshire Chilterns Student Union but prizes aside the band also picked up a manager, Tom Manning of MusicMann Promotions. Now armed with a mean merchandise range and a plan of attack Mr Derry have started to venture into London at West Kensington’s West One Four and already have a Clapham Grand gig lined up for early 2006 which will definitely be a biggie as it holds 2000 people. The band also took part in BCSU’s John Peel Tribute gig with the band again going down a treat on October 13th 2005.

"The amazing 5 piece ripped into the crowd with a truly impressive one hour set, and for their third gig the band oozed confidence. Lead singer Joni Coyne gave the tracks a very 60's feel, her husky voice blended seamlessly into the music with bittersweet perfection. Their style was reminiscent of The Strokes in parts but the fantastic female lead made it their own. The self-penned tracks blended pop with rock and country, without ever slipping to far into one genre." ,

All hands to the pump

The strategy for the here and now is to keep expanding the fan base with gigs around Birmingham and other close by towns and cities’ picking up Derriers as the momentum builds. Mr Derry will also appear occasionally in London in preparation for the Grand. With an ever growing fan base and a voice that will start to be heard you will undoudbtly be hearing and seeing a lot more of Mr Derry as those crazy kids from Burntwood, Staffordshire get exposed in 2006!.
